Today was the last session of our program. Instead of retelling stories, we gathered in a roundtable discussion where seniors and students expressed their sentiments about the import of the program. It was a heartfelt and empowering session. Thank you all: students and seniors for your gracious time and energy, we hope you enjoyed this year’s Bearing Witness! We will have pictures and stories from the sessions up soon!
Feb 25, 2009
Today we held our third session of Bearing Witness. Seniors and students paired off to discuss the remaining aspects of the seniors’ stories, specifically focusing on their lives after the war, their immigration to the US, and their current perspectives on their history. The impact of the continued conversations on the understanding and communication shared by the students and seniors was felt by all. In addition, two survivors, husband and wife Allen and Dorothy, were honored ono the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary. They met in Poland shortly after the liberation, but were only married upon meeting each other again in Toronto, Canada. Their marriage is a testament to strength of love and the human spirit in light of such great tragedy. Mazel Tov to them!

Our second BW session was held on this day, Feb 11 2009 at 12 noon at Hillel, and it was *amazing*.  In the short duration of one hour, students and seniors engaged in a very deep learning experience about survivors’ experience of the war itself.  There was much emotion, but also much warmth, as both parties acknowledged that this engagement was of such great importance in the mission to learn from the lessons of that time period.  Once again, we thank all the seniors and students for their great enthusiasm and *courage* that is necessary to both recount and to whole-heartedly listen to these stories.
We look forward to our third session in a few weeks (Feb 25th), where students and seniors will continue their respective discussions, herein focusing on the seniors’ lives after the end of the war.
January 21, 2009
Our first BW session of the year, held earlier today, was a resounding success!  We had over 35 students, 12 seniors, and several guests show up for what turned out to be an excellent first session.  There was plenty of food (and there will be more the next time around), and the seniors greatly appreciated the students’ enthusiasm.  After brief introductions, students paired up with seniors and the groups began exploring the respective stories that the seniors carry.  The focus for this session was ‘life before the war’, thus students and seniors explored the various facets of Jewish life just before the Holocaust as described by the survivors.
We look forward to our second sessions next week, which will focus on the war itself.  It should be a very educational experience.
January 18th, 2009
We are gearing up and ready to go for our FIRST session with the seniors in 2009.  It will be on January 21st from 12pm-1pm at UCLA’s Hillel Center.  We have over 30 student participants registered to meet with about 12 seniors.  Students have had the option to attend an oral history training where they learned the best methods of how to breach such a sensitive subject matter with their respective interviewees.  The students have also been provided with ‘template’ questionnaires and have been encouraged to think through where they would want their stories to go.  And finally, students are very, very excited to meet the seniors this Wednesday.  We all are.
